"Dusty Ventures" (dustyventures)

It’s request week! This week every suggestion comes from one (or more) of you nutters.
This week’s song, Mother, is part of the massive - and massively weird - rock opera that is The Wall. For those not familiar with the plot of The Wall, and Mother’s place within it, I’m just going to paste this little explainer from Wikipedia:
The Wall tells the story of Pink, an embittered and alienated rock star. As told through the song “Mother”, part of Pink’s sense of alienation comes from being raised by an overprotective single mother, who lost her husband, Pink’s father, in World War II. The song narrates a conversation by Pink (voiced by Waters) and his mother (voiced by Gilmour). The listener learns of the overprotectiveness of Pink’s mother, who is helping Pink build his wall to try to protect him from the outside world, evidenced by the line “Of course Momma’s gonna help build the wall,” spoken by Pink’s mother. She insists that Pink stay by her side even after he grows up, and cannot stand it when Pink eventually grows older and falls in love.
In 2011 Jimmy Fallon did a “Pink Floyd week” on his Late Night show, culminating with a somber rendition of Mother by Pearl Jam. It impressed many and even went viral online. But can it really stand up to the original?

I considered it, but I think that would be a very one-sided fight. That said, if someone officially suggests it...

Mother, do you think they’ll try to break my balls?

Floyd wins because I’ve seen The Wall in concert twice and the performance was just amazing.
Also, I’m recommending The Ghost of Tom Joad and Rise Against’s cover with Tom Morello, Wayne Kramer, and Brian Fallon.

Another good pink floyd cover is Scissor Sisters Comfortably Numb.

If you’re going to do a cover by Korn, I’d much rather see Word Up. I actually liked that one a bit.
Also, on the subject of cross-genre covers, I think Lollipop (Lil Wayne/Framing Hanley) is an interesting one.

I can’t stand either one of these bands so I’ll abstain from voting in this one. I would like to offer a few suggestions for the future, however.
Layla-Eric Clapton electric vs Eric Clapton Accoustic
Baker Street-Gerry Rafferty vs Foo Fighters
Boyz n the Hood-Eazy E vs Dynamite Hack

Baker Street’s in the queue, but I’ll add the other two to the list.

Yes, but that’s not a cover album. Renegades is.

Rise Against cover vs Rage’s cover, or Springsteen’s original?

I’m trying to keep this a head-to-head thing. I think what killed Battle of the Covers was there being too many versions to go through.

Fair point. Go with the Rage cover versus Springsteen, then. Or listen to all three and pick what you want. I’m an internet commenter, not a cop.

Thanks for doing something with Floyd. I’m a fan. I listened to the Pearl Jam version. It is very, very good. But the Pink Floyd trumps it for two reasons. They are not fair reasons, but they tip the scales in this case
1) the angst that Roger puts into that song is real. It is part of him.
2) Pearl Jam put on a great live performance, but it was squared off against the fully studio produced Pink Floyd icon. The Wall has some beautiful music in it. That is beyond some of the tripy moments and rock opera bits. Just some really beautiful stuff and Mother has that as well.
I would say O’Connor’s version is better than PJ’s as well, but she is performing it with Waters so she gets bonus out of that.
And if you want to see the real deal live...

Floyd. Easy for me. For some reason I cannot stand Eddie Vedder’s voice. Like fingernails on a chalkboard. Don’t know why.

Mother might be better when played together with the rest of the album, not the Pink Floyd song I play the most. The cover seems a bit bleak in comparison, even though it is a good performance in itself.
